The annual Chicago Transit Authority’s holiday train stars in photographer David Sowa’s (@david.sowa) #WHPLayers photo. “Watching the train light up its surroundings combined with the added ‘layer’ of snow really made it that much more magical,” says David, who waited for about 30 minutes on a parking garage for the perfect shot.

“This is the amount of cats I’ll have in the future if I don’t get a girlfriend right now,” writes Jimmy Chan (@jimchanfc) in the caption to his #WHPLayers submission. Yes, Jimmy, there’s a lot of layers to this one. 😻

“Makeup has definitely helped me realize who I am and who I want to be,” says Ivan Lam (@ivanbaaaaah). “It’s helped me express what I truly feel inside on the outside. That’s super important to me. I think everybody should be able to express themselves fully without judgment. I’m so glad that I got to do this with makeup. It’s been a journey, and it’s definitely helped me a lot as a person.” 💄💋

“I like the idea that we can do things by ourselves and don’t have to buy everything,” says illustrator, designer and #DIY enthusiast Ira Sluyterman van Langeweyde (@iraville). “Self-made things are more special and valuable. For me, it’s much more fulfilling to paint into a sketchbook I have bound myself, with watercolors I have made myself.” Ira finds inspiration for her watercolor illustrations in a number of things: picture books, animated films, small towns, idyllic scenes of everyday life.
This month, she is participating in Flow Germany’s (@flow_magazin) #DIYnachten project. Every day in December, Flow will reveal a new tutorial for a DIY gift — just like a Christmas advent calendar. Spoiler alert: Ira’s self-made gift is a watercolor bookmark. “I like to read myself,” she says. “Also, I thought it would be a good idea for making book presents more unique.” 🎁🎄

Weekend Hashtag Project: #WHPLayers
This weekend the challenge is to make images and videos that play with layers and depth, as in this featured photo from @mao_kokubu. Here are some tips:
Build depth in your image. Accentuate the background or foreground elements in your image or video. Whether it’s a closeup detail of a giant leaf, an out of focus building on the horizon or a car passing through the foreground of your frame, objects can come together to create a layered composition.
Look for pre-existing layers. Think about documenting your subject behind interesting layers, like a wire fence, or through a window with interesting reflections.
Get detailed. You can embody a sense of depth and layers in the details of an intricate hairstyle, the colorful layers of a tall cake or even what lies beneath a corner of peeling paint.
PROJECT RULES: Please add the #WHPLayers hashtag only to photos and videos shared over this weekend and only submit your own visuals to the project. By adding the #WHPLayers hashtag, you consent to and grant Instagram all rights to repost your photo or video. If you include music in your video submissions, please only use music to which you own the rights. Any tagged photo or video shared over the weekend with the #WHPLayers hashtag is eligible for the project and, if selected, to be featured next week.

Hello, world! Today’s #WeeklyFluff is Non, a 2-year-old Himalayan cat and member of the @sakuracos family. According to her human, she loves cuddling up. (We’re not surprised.) 😻

Meet Ivy (@ivyinthewild), whose human Allie Dexel captured this image for #WHPsquares on frozen Lake Windermere in British Columbia. “I love that the ice blocks show the thickness of the ice sheet,” explains Allie. “Ivy is definitely a ‘winter person’ and she is very content surrounded by snow and ice. She helps me appreciate winter more and see how fun and beautiful it can be.”

“In this picture, I like the contrast and the silhouette of my cat, which seems like an elegant cabaret dancer,” says artist and photographer Tiziana Vergari (@tizzia). She took this photo of Negrita (one of her three cats) at her house, in the heart of the Swiss Alps.

“You don’t have to be good (or have ever played) to play with us,” explains Aria McManus, the founder (and captain) of Downtown Girls Basketball (@downtowngirlsbball). “You can just come as you are.” The 29-year-old artist and designer started the team in New York City six years ago. “Creating a space to be silly and fun and bringing people together is really the most rewarding part.”

Fashion designer Domingo (@domingoxlatarde) created this three-dimensional self-portrait for #WHPsquares. “When you see it, it looks like it’s flat, but then you look at it twice, and it’s different,” says Domingo.

“Hakone is my favorite place in Japan. It’s a magical town in the mountains that feels like something out of a Miyazaki film,” says photographer and writer Erika Hobart (@erikaexplores), who took this photo with her boyfriend just before sunrise. “I wanted to capture how small and humble I felt surrounded by its majestic beauty, and this enormous torii gate provided the perfect natural framing for the moment.” #WHPsquares

The window panes of Fran Laurendeau’s home inspired her to frame golden retriever Lizzie’s (@lizzie.bear) face for #WHPsquares. “I love that Lizzie’s smiling at me as if she’s been waiting for me all day,” says Fran.

After working as a designer in the fashion industry for 15 years, Isobel Schofield started Bryr Clogs (@bryrclogs) in 2012. “I felt that there was a better way to make things that was responsible, ethical and connected,” says Isobel, whose company makes every pair of clogs to order in their San Francisco workshop. “Since the very beginning, I’ve connected with my community through Instagram. I shoot all our photos and stories on my phone, capturing real moments from life in the studio and out in the world. I believe that being authentically ourselves, and showing what we do and why we love it, brings like-minded people to us.”
Isobel’s advice to new businesses trying to build a presence on Instagram? “Be real and be true to who you are and what you believe in.”
Watch as Isobel and her team construct a pair of their signature clogs on today’s story for #SmallBizSat.

Weekend Hashtag Project: #WHPsquares
This weekend it’s time to think (in or) outside the box. The challenge is to make images and videos that play with variations on the square, as in this featured photo from Alina Rudya (@rrrudya).
Here are some tips:
Start with the shape. Find or create patterns using squares. A checkerboard floor, a tall building with a grid of shuttered windows, or even a random configuration of three-dimensional cubes could all be fun starting points for your submission.
Try a new angle. Get creative with new perspectives. For example, place your subject in the corner of a square room and have them stretch out to fill the extremities of a life-sized square frame; set your friend atop of an oversized cube; or use a square frame within your image to draw attention to your desired point of focus.
Be playful. Revisit your childhood for inspiration. Think of games like tic-tac-toe, hopscotch and chess that are all based around the square. Or go outside of the box and use your imagination! Build an environment out of colorful blocks, or turn a cardboard box into a rocket and have your pet go for ride. 🚀
PROJECT RULES: Please add the #WHPsquares hashtag only to photos and videos shared over this weekend and only submit your own visuals to the project. By adding the #WHPsquares hashtag, you consent to and grant Instagram all rights to repost your photo or video. If you include music in your video submissions, please only use music to which you own the rights. Any tagged photo or video shared over the weekend with the #WHPsquares hashtag is eligible for the project and, if selected, to be featured next week.

Eva Kosmas Flores’ (@evakosmasflores) food philosophy = seasonal and local. “When we eat seasonally and support local farmers and growers, there are so many awesome things that happen,” says Eva. “Our meals taste infinitely better. Your local community’s economy grows. You’re eating nutrient-dense foods. And you’re helping the environment by reducing carbon emissions that come from shipping food all over the world.”
This year for #Thanksgiving, Eva will head to her parents’ house with her husband — the couple recently bought 29 aces (12 hectares) of logged forest they plan to restore to a healthy forest — plus a mix of friends and family. “I love that we all get to gather around a beautiful meal and enjoy the last of all the tasty autumn foods altogether.”
